Dr. Amartya Ganguly
Biography
Dr. Amartya Ganguly is a Group Leader and Senior Scientist at the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI), Technical University of Munich, where he leads the Intelligent Neuroprosthetics research group. His work sits at the intersection of neuroscience, biomechanics, and robotics, with a focus on developing intelligent assistive and rehabilitative technologies for the upper limb.
Dr. Ganguly received his PhD from the University of Hull, UK. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Keele University, he was part of the team that developed the world’s leading real-time neuromusculoskeletal model of the human hand – a landmark contribution that remains the current state-of-the-art in upper limb modelling, incorporating proprioceptive models in user-in-the-loop scenarios.
His early career was distinguished by selection for the prestigious Horizon 2020 Innosup programme, through which he served as an Innovation Associate at Marsi Bionics in Madrid, Spain. In this role, he contributed to clinical testing of the world’s first paediatric exoskeleton and played a central role in establishing a state-of-the-art Biomechanics laboratory in collaboration with CSIC-CAR Madrid.
Dr. Ganguly has also contributed to clinical translation through the EIT Health project, a multinational initiative in partnership with the University of Heidelberg, INRIA, and CNRS at the University of Montpellier, France, focused on developing hand models for clinical use cases. His broader expertise spans neuromusculoskeletal modelling, CE certification of medical devices, wearable assistive devices, and clinical trials.
In recognition of his contributions to the field, Dr. Ganguly is the recipient of an Early Career Award co-funded by the Indian and German governments through the Indo-German Science and Technology Centre (IGSTC). He is also a member of the EU COST Action CA16116 initiative on Wearable Robotics, a collaborative network bringing together leading academic and industrial partners to advance cutting-edge assistive and rehabilitative technologies.
